Disable Adobe Speed Launcher

Post by wmmiller »

It looks like the latest Adobe reader update snuck one in on us. "Adobe Speed Launcher". I couldn’t find an option to disable it so I went to task manager, start and disabled "Adobe Reader and Acrobat Manager". It seems to have done the job and Adobe Reader is working fine. It also seems to create random numbers. I think it requires a reboot after its been disabled. If theres a better way, I’m all ears. (What the heck are they thinking?)

I don't open PDFs with Adobe reader. You'll probably laugh at this, but I open them with Google chrome. I found it offers the features I need for PDFs, which are interactive form filling, view and print. Can't convert to WORD or EXEL, though.

I had seen that entry recently in a client machine, but weirdly, I installed it on my Windows 7 x64 and the RunOnce entry was not created. Don't know if it was a bug and they fixed it. I'm gonna test on Windows 8.1 now.

The RunOnce entry was not created on Windows 8.1 either.

I suggest you download and install the latest package from http://get.adobe.com/reader/

That’s odd because I’m using windows 8.1 x64 and I uninstalled it using UVK and then reinstalled it before posting.
Just for fun, I again, uninstalled it using add remove programs and reinstalled it using the link you posted. (Same link I used earlier) and this is what I’m getting without disabling as posted above. I do notice that now UVK says file not found, likely because I told it to delete entry and file earlier.

I don't think so, bill. As far as I remember from the client's PC I saw that Runonce entry, it didn't really point to a file path, it was rather a number, as shown in your screenshot. Use the Jump to the registry key feature to check that out.

I guess it's just a bug. You can safely delete it.

It's probably worth to mention I didn't had Adobe reader installed, so I made a clean install, rather than an update.

There is an update for this issue. I just found out about this and haven’t tried it yet, but here’s the information.

"Acrobat Help /Multiple RunOnce keys created | 11.0.10, 10.1.13 | Acrobat, Reader"

"We have confirmation of a fix for the alerts about a new Run Once program referencing only numbers. If you are still experiencing this issue or know someone who is, you can download the fix from http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/runon ... -user.html.
Please follow the instructions for Solution 2."
