Execute Prevent

Post by wmmiller »

Hi Fred,

Last night when I was messing around I discovered “Execute Prevent”. This was released when I was in the hospital and I didn’t even know it. This is a great new feature and I really appreciate. I’ve now kicked CryptoPrevent to the curb. UVK just keeps getting better. Thank you Fred for all the hard work you do on UVK. :D

Hi Bill.

Well, it seems like you're not reading the change log too often...

Glad you liked it. I remember you suggested a similar feature some time ago.

Normally I take a look at the change log whenever there’s a new version release. Admittedly, I had not taken a look at it since I’ve been out of the hospital. I haven’t been doing a lot lately. I was surprised when I ran across the new feature and immediately went to the change log to see when it was implemented. It’s awesome! :D

I only used cp a couple of times. Never really cared for it and just really didn't like his face on my computer all the time. His image is like nails on a chalk board to me so I was really happy when Fred introduced execute prevent!!!!

hello and I am back much to the pain of others...but I also am excited about Execute prevent. Shared with my employers since we all now have UVK on our pc's. I am really dumb tho..and dont know how to best use this feature. Could any one take their time which I know is precious and explain some steps I should take? I have read everything I can read on all these forums and I know it's sad..but I get lost in all the tech stuff still. We have 4 pc's, two desktops and 2 laptops used by our doctors. by law we have to reasonable measure to protect our network from invasion but most can slow our systems down to the point of taking up knitting while waiting for a pc to respond...all while a patient is standing there waiting. We run Windows 7 Prof 64bit/32 and mostly run software programs (the main program) from the web. Is UVK an "after-care" only or this new Execute prevent considerate "preventative" measures? not sure how to implement completely. any advice or help? sure do wish Fred you could just dial in and let me watch you work..cuz I am still as dumb as I was back is 2011.

UVK is an clean up tool. Execute prevent does not prevent hacking but it does HELP to prevent virus and spyware attacks by limiting the paths that you can run things from. This is very helpfull in preventing programs like Cryptolocker and it's off spins.

On a very basic level if you need to secure your office from attack your best bet is to setup limited user accounts, turn off the guest account and create a nice secure password for the admin account. Also make sure the built in admin account is disabled. You should also invest in a Sonic wall as it is one of the best for blocking access from the outside. If you offer free wifi to clients you might consider adding access on a different subnet that is not accessible to you main network to help eliminate that threat as well.

Do not rely on execute to protect your system from outside threats as that is not what it was intended to do.

I had to disable the execute prevent, since I clearly dont know what I am doing but I have done something to my system. My PC fax program driver keeps getting deleted and reinstall now has errors. My recycle bin has nothing in it even tho it really does and I have no Properties that aren't all greyed out. I tried getting to my Local Group Policy editor and even as the administrator i have no access. what in the world happened. I believe I will need to restore my system to back before I discovered this button.

Almost sounds like Execute prevent is still active. Open it back up and select none or turn off. The top option and then save.

You might also un-immunize if you have that set as well.

Jamie,

In order to disable Execute Prevent, you need to select the "Disable Execute prevent" preset, and click "Save & apply". Otherwise it will still be active.

Also, in order for Execute Prevent to work properly you need to know how to work with the "List affected files" feature, and exclude the applications that Execute prevent is blocking.
