Unexplained change in Memeo Backup Premium start up

Hi Fred,

I need some advice. I have a program (Memeo Backup Premium) that puts an icon in the system tray. It’s done that for a few years now and still does. However, in the last week it is now popping up its window on the desktop every time I start the computer. I have it installed on two other computers and on those computers it still just puts the icon in the tray as it should and always has. I uninstalled it and then cleared the registry using UVK registry seeker as well as regedit find feature and then reinstalled. The problem computer is a Windows 8.1 Professional x64 with Media Center. Any Ideas?

Bill

I also compared the registry keys from one of the other computers and they appear to be the same except the files being backed up and the computer information.

Hi Bill.

How's the application loaded at startup? Autorun registry entry? Scheduled task? Win32 service?

I think this entry is what makes it run with no UI.

Hers' the other entries I know of:

Startup type : Registry Startup
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run] or
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run] or
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]

Display Name : Memeo Backup Premium
Path : C:\Program Files\Memeo\AutoBackupPro\MemeoLauncher2.exe --silent --no_ui

OK, have you checked out if the autorun entry is exactly the same in the other pc's, including the command line parameters? You can also try closing the application, and try running that command (C:\Program Files\Memeo\AutoBackupPro\MemeoLauncher2.exe --silent --no_ui) and see if it starts up silently.

It may also be some option set up in the application itself, such as a check box that says something like "Show this window at startup", or "Don't show this window again", and you need to either check or uncheck it.

I never used memeo backup, but I can install it to test it out, if you want.

Fred,

I got this figured out with help from my wife Jamie. She asked me what I was bitching about and when I told her, she said her computer started doing the same thing. Well, last week a saw some talk on another tech forum about a program called Unchecky. I thought that it sound like the prefect program for her because she’s always installing stuff and doesn’t know how it got there. I decided to install it on her computer as well as mine to test it out. It seems to work well, but I have now found (for me at least) an issues with it. I also noticed that it added several entries to the host file. There may be a way to whitelist things but I haven’t investigated that yet. Long story short, I uninstalled it and all is well again. Thanks so much for your help! :)

Bill

Glad you figured it out. Yeah, unchecky is quite well known among the IT world. Didn't know about those issues, though.

It would be nice to figure out why it would be preventing memeo from launch minimized.

It would be nice to know why. I did send a message with information to them from their contact link. Unchecky seems to do what it is designed to do.

You did well by sending them the message. It must be a simple bug. My guess is that the application is calling the ShowWindow() function before unchecking the check box buttons.

Unchecky helps, but no solution is perfect. Still, I tend to throw it on every PC I find with adware/malware, because even just a few less incidents is a good thing.

Note that it won't work as expected if the program you're installing uses a non-msi installer, since it doesn't know what to look for in those.

Hi Bill,

Thank you for the report.
I could reproduce the issue. It will be fixed in the next version of Unchecyk.

Best regards,
