Windows 10 error 0xc000021a

Post by wmmiller »

Hi guys,

I have a Windows 10 computer that will not boot to Windows. It keeps bringing up error 0xc000021a and then reboots to do it all over again. I tried system restore but it tells me I need to choose an OS first but it gives no option to do so. I tried to run sfc /scannow and it tells me there is a pending repair and starts the loop all over. Bing searching this error I have tried several things without luck.

I now have it connected by USB to another Windows 10 computer and using disk manager it shows up fine and I can look thru the files without issue. Is it possible to run sfc /scannow on a USB drive?

I’m cloning the drive now to be safe. I’ve tried many things and now I’m getting bogged down and frustrated :? and wondering if I’m missing the obvious simple solution. If anyone can toss out an idea, I’m all ears.

Thanks, Bill

Bill

If it were me, I would copy all their docs, images etc and reinstall Windows 10.
Windows 10 reinstalls pretty quick especially if you have an updated install media.

I find Windows 10 does that a lot. Personally, I think after it gets used a while, it gets bored and depressed then commits suicide....

I'm sure there is a better explanation, I'm just too lazy to find it when a reinstall works just as good as anything else.

LOL Jim. That’s a hoot. I think you may be correct in your assessment on Windows 10. It sure can be a pain in the hole. I’m kind of thinking the same thing about just reinstalling it. I did notice Office on there but I think it’s a trial version. I’m going to give them a call and ask a few question about that and see what they say.
One more thing. It is Windows 7 Home that was upgrade to 10. (I’m assuming when 10 was free) Do you know if there’s a way to reinstall Windows 10 and somehow keep the recovery partition that is on there so it may actually still work if one so chooses?

Thanks, Bill

I could be mistaken because honestly I've never cared to verify my thoughts but I believe the recovery partition is dependant on the installed OS. So, I'm thinking with Windows 10, a Windows 7 recovery partition would not work anyway.

To be honest, I've never been, not any body I personally know, been a fan of just upgrading an OS. So, I really am shocked that Microsoft got away with it as well as they did because OSes always work better clean installed.

I understand what you’re saying about a clean install. On my own computers I went ahead with the upgrade but afterword’s did a clean install since once installed it will let that be done. I also make clones of my computers so when crap like this happens, it’s not a big deal. It’s nice to start over now and then too.

In my opinion, the best way to do a clone is to fully set your computer up. All the apps and settings you want THEN clone it. That way, when you restore, you'll have to update couple apps but all the major stuff will be setup and ready to do.

Also, did you know that Windows 10 will still upgrade free from 7/8/8.1? If you didn't, try it :)

Did not know that. How do you go about it? Use the Windows upgrade assistant?

As for cloning. I install Windows and Microsoft Office and then all updates and clone it. Then by time I need the clone. Those need updating again so I update them, clone it and install the rest of the stuff I want. Since I have enough storage, I keep the three most currant clones just in case.

For windows 8/8.1 you just install Windows 10 and it will activate on it's own.

For Windows 7, Install Windows 10 then use the Windows 7 key to activate it.
