Stop Windows 10 Anniversary Update

Does anyone have a good way to stop Windows 10 anniversary update? I have a computer that belongs to a small electrical contractor and ever since the anniversary update their electrical estimating program stopped working. I have a clone of the computer right after 7 was upgraded to 10 and the estimate program works fine until I install the anniversary update. Having their program not working isn’t an option. If there is a way to stop it and still be able to receive other updates would be ideal. I don’t want to turn windows update off, but that is where we are at if there is no other way. Luckily only one computer has updated at this point but there are three others if updated will mess their program up. Any thoughts or ideas would be helpful. :)

I found and am going to try this. http://www.infoworld.com/article/310582 ... -1607.html
I hope it shows up so I can disable it and give it back. If anyone has a better/another way, I’m open to your ideas.

Thanks, Bill

Hey, Bill.

Re-installing the program does not make it work?

That's pretty odd that it won't work after update, there's not so much modifications between windows 10 and anniversary version (if it works before, it should work after), I'll go for a reinstall of the program like Fred suggested...

I did try to reinstall it. Tried a repair too. It jacked up Quick books for me on the computer I use for invoicing so I ditched it on that computer and went back to 7. So annoying.

I see now that the estimate program authors are selling an upgrade so it will work with the anniversary update. I guess I better make a call and see what they would like to do.
The younger guys in the company switched to a different program about a year ago because the support for the program in question is a pain in the butt and the people are rude. With the older two guys, they don’t want to change because they know this program and just don’t want to switch.

This is why I in the middle of converting a Filemaker 4.1 database to SQL. They didn't want to upgrade for so long that they are now in danger of loosing the system all together because it only runs up to Windows XP. They could pay a couple thousand to update it a new version of File maker but no one knows the original password to the database and it would still be in Filemakers proprietary format. Changing it to SQL will make the format more industry standard and add value to the company over all.

I know right? I talked to them and they want me to see if I can disable this update. They both said they are trying to bow out of the business, retire and let their sons completely take over. I guess I can’t blame them but they have been on the bow out retire path for about five years. Oh, I suggested maybe just going back to 7 but they moved to a new building about two years ago and nobody knows where the binder with their license information is. Too many cooks in the kitchen too.

The PCs don't have coas attached to them?

Yes, they do. I wasn’t very clear on that now that you ask. Windows isn’t the problem, it’s the estimate program. They don’t know what happen to the binder with the information and the disks. If they had those disks and information they could buy the update that has been put out to make it compatible with the anniversary update for $298.00/ machine. That just to make it work with the anniversary update. I think it should be a patch rather than charge to make it work again. They are jerks to deal with and that’s mostly why the younger guys switched to a different estimator program.

That does make lots more sense now that I know what you're hunting for. I also agree that if a version is released just to make it compatible with a windows patch, it should be free. I mean, let's face it, the anniversary addition is really just a patch :)

Question: I can’t seem to easily find the answer and thought one of you guys may know. If one updates to the anniversary update it can be rolled back. After rolling back to the previous version for whatever reason, what stops it from just installing again?

Just a quick, right off the top of my head suggestion would be to do a system restore on it. Then see if you can hide that update in Windows updates. Other than that I would have to research it.

I’m going to try and roll it back and see if I can hide it. The anniversary update shuts windows restore off. That seems just dumb but it's a complaint many have.

Bill, I think this is what you want:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/ins ... windows-10

The option can be found in Settings->Update & Security->Windows update->Advanced Options

There is also a group policy available under Computer Configuration->Administrative Templates->Windows Components->Windows Update->Defer Windows Updates: Select When Features Are Received.

You can defer feature updates up to 180 days and/or Pause feature updates, which will give you 60 extra days.

Other than that, I think you'd need to disable the Windows update service in order to stop receiving Windows updates completely. Not recommended, but that would be the ultimate solution.

This has Home on it. It’s beginning to be a pain in the butt. The link in my second post should work, but I have to wait for it to show up. I’m running out of time because I need to head to the big city on Monday. I need to be admitted to the hospital for a bunch of testing because they can’t figure out what’s the matter with me. I guess I will give it back and keep an eye out for it to show up. If it does install again we have ten days to roll it back.

There are some sites that claim group policy editor can be enabled on home versions but I don’t know if that is really possible or if I would want to try that. Has anyone ever seen that or tried it?

I’m with you on not disabling window update. That’s what they wanted me to do and I told them it’s not a good idea.

A company's machine with Home edition? Odd...

You're right about the solution in your second post. I hadn't read it, and I didn't know about that troubleshooter. I can add it to TTS so it will be easier for you to run it in each machine, when the time comes.

As for the Group policy editor, you don't need it for this. policies are also saved to the registry, so we can just use the registry version. I exported the policies to a reg file that you can use. To enable deferring feature updates, merge DeferFeatureUpdates.reg. To disable, merge UndoDeferUpdates.reg.

At least it will buy you some time until you're more available to take care of it. Maybe they will decide to upgrade the software or something in the meantime. Hope it helps.

Thank you Fred. :D

Here’s why they have home. No one there really knows what going on computer wise and they decided before I knew them that they all wanted new computers, so they just went out and bought them with no thought about it. The only one they have that doesn’t have home is a used Dell I sold them about four years ago. I also tried to tell them they should have a personal and work computer.

Go figure. They only remember we're alive when things stop working...
